Famous Trenton Jazz Musicians
James Stewart
Trenton born and raised saxophonist, composer and band leader. He attended Trenton Central High School and New Jersey City University, later returning to teach in the Trenton school system. In the 1970’s and early 1980’s he performed with the Sam Rivers Orchestra, including the Newport Jazz Festival in 1979. He is a staple of the Trenton jazz community.
Richie Cole
Trenton born alto saxophonist, composer and arranger, he is known for his “alto madness” bebop style.
Michael Ray
Trenton born trumpeter, vocalist and composer. He has performed with the R&B acts Patti LaBelle, The Delfonics, The Stylistics and Kool &the Gang. Since the 1990’s, Michael formed and leads his own band Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe. Michael uses his jazz chops touring with the Sun Ra Arkestra.
Clifford Adams
Trenton born trombonist and teacher. After graduating from Trenton State College, he developed his talents playing in local clubs, which lead to performing with George Benson, The Stylistics and Kool &the Gang.
Thomas Grice
Born in Pensacola, Florida, Thomas enjoyed playing the tenor sax. His younger brother Gigi Grice, a gifted jazz and classical trumpeter urged him to peruse music education instead of performing. He arrived in Trenton in the mid-1950’s and taught music at Trenton Central High School. Some of his most notable students he taught and mentored are Sarah Dash, Nona Hendrix, Clifford Adam’s, Kim Miller, Michael Ray and Kimberly Covington.

Grice and several of his students and colleagues co-founded the Thomas Grice Academy of Music, providing free or low cost music lessons to his students.

Thomas Grice was also a beloved elder statesman of New Jersey’s jazz community, performing regularly in Clubs in Trenton and Newark.
